Daily Challenge Rules: How It Works
The Daily Challenge is a single, fixed round of Maxi Yatzy that every player in the world plays on the exact same dice, once a day. It uses the full standard ruleset — see the complete Maxi Yatzy rules if you need a refresher on what each scoring box means — with a handful of its own rules layered on top. Here's everything that's different, and everything that's the same.
What is the Daily Challenge?
It's a solo round with a twist borrowed from daily word puzzles: instead of a random roll generated just for you, the dice for today's challenge are fixed for everyone, worldwide, for the whole day. You get the same twenty rolls — and the same choices about what to re-roll and what to hold — as every other player who opens the page today. That's what makes comparing your score on the leaderboard meaningful: nobody got luckier dice than you did.
How the shared board works
Every die, on every roll, in every one of the twenty turns, is generated from today's date rather than from randomness. Reroll the third die on your fifth turn's second roll, and you'll land on the exact same face every other player who makes that same reroll does — no matter what else you've held, scored, or skipped before it. The board resets at 00:00 UTC, when a brand new fixed set of rolls takes over for the next day's challenge.
How to play
- Open today's Daily Challenge and roll — the dice are the same for everyone today.
- Just like regular Maxi Yatzy, you get up to three rolls per turn, holding whichever dice you want to keep in between.
- After your rolls, lock in one of the twenty open scoring boxes.
- Repeat for all twenty boxes, then submit — your run is final the moment the sheet is complete.
If any of the twenty boxes themselves — ones through sixes, the straights, house, villa, tower, Maxi Yatzy, and the rest — aren't familiar, these two pages cover every combination and how it scores:
Saved rolls are on
The Daily Challenge always plays with saved rolls enabled — if you stop after one or two rolls on a turn because you've already got what you need, the rolls you didn't use are banked and can be spent as extra re-rolls on a later turn. It's the same banking rule available in regular rooms, just never switched off here, so every player's board plays out under identical conditions.
Scoring is fixed for everyone
The upper-section bonus always uses the Alga rule — 84 or more points in the upper section earns a flat 100-point bonus — the same variant for every player, every day. That's deliberate: with one fixed ruleset, your total is directly comparable to anyone else's on the same board, with no "which bonus variant" asterisk. The maximum possible score, same ceiling as a perfect game of regular Maxi Yatzy, is 649 points.
One attempt, once a day
You get a single run at each day's board. Once your scoresheet is complete, your result is submitted and locked — there's no retry, and no way to improve it after the fact. Come back after the reset at 00:00 UTC for a brand new set of dice and a fresh attempt.
The leaderboard and your streak
Today's top scores are visible before, during, and after your own run — seeing someone else's total doesn't reveal anything about the board itself, so there's no reason to hide it until you've finished. The Daily Challenge also tracks its own streak: the number of consecutive days you've completed this specific challenge, separate from the general stats tracked elsewhere on the site.
Sharing your result
After you finish, you can copy a short summary of your run — your total score plus a colored grid showing how each box went (gold for Maxi Yatzy, green for a strong score, gray for average, and an empty square for anything scratched) — without spoiling the actual numbers for anyone who hasn't played yet.
Frequently asked questions
- Does everyone really get the same dice?
- Yes — every roll in every turn is generated from the date, not randomly, so a given turn and reroll always lands on the same faces for every player that day, regardless of what anyone held.
- Can I play the Daily Challenge more than once?
- No. One attempt per UTC day — once your sheet is complete and submitted, that result is final until the next reset.
- What time does a new challenge start?
- 00:00 UTC, every day. The countdown on the Daily Challenge page always shows the time remaining.
- Which bonus variant does the Daily Challenge use?
- Always the Alga variant: 84+ points in the upper section for a 100-point bonus. It's fixed so every player's total is directly comparable.
- Are saved rolls always on in the Daily Challenge?
- Yes — unlike regular rooms, where it's an optional setting, the Daily Challenge always plays with saved rolls enabled for everyone.
- Can I see the leaderboard before I've played?
- Yes. Today's scores are shown on the Daily Challenge page at any time — before, during, or after your own run.
